Master the Art of the Pivot: leveraging creativity boosts success

MJ has done it, Stewart has done it, and even Steve Harvey has done it. At some point, every high functioning professional, must figure out how to “do it;” if he or she wants to remain relevant and on top of his/her game. What is the “it” factor I am speaking of? I am talking about mastering the art of the pivot in your career. Mastering the art of the pivot means being very specific, measured, and intentional about the turning point in your career and life. It means approaching change in a very determined, laser-focused, and strategic way; so that your success continues to reach new heights.

In a recent documentary, famous tennis star, Venus Williams, talked about a time in her life when many health challenges plagued her. Her mother, along with other advisors, noted that Venus was getting older; while others in competitive tennis were entering much younger. It was suggested that perhaps it was time for her (Venus) career path to take another course; try to reach success in other creative pursuits.

If you are a creative, you can be successful in more than one idea. You may dominate in one area of expertise, but that main skillset won’t be enough to sustain you forever. You must continue to reinvent yourself. Those who have long lasting success do so because they have mastered the art of the pivotal point in their career and life. Jordan, Johnson, Stewart, Harvey, etc.… these entrepreneurs are still effective and relevant today; because when it was time to transition in their career, they were smart enough and intentional enough to do so.

For Venus, she realized she could not physically play at the same level that won her championships early in her career. She also realized that while she was getting her body healthy and strong again, she needed to still push herself in other creative ways. She became an activist for equality in pay for professional women in tennis. In addition, she created her own fashion line of athletic apparel, and an interior design company; among other enterprising ventures.

The key thing to understand is high functioning creatives are constantly finding ways to unleash their creative expression. If you limit yourself to just one way of expression, you will eventually become exhausted; possibly even experience burnout. You must have more than one way to channel your creative energy. Those who master the art of the pivot throughout life will be most likely to soar to great heights well beyond the dominance they were once known for. If you have been using only one channel of creative expression, and you’re ready to dial-in to your creative power at the next level, connect with me here. I’ll show you how. ?
