Health Benefits To Spiritual Rest

Health Benefits To Spiritual Rest

Have you ever heard of the phrase “go with the flow?” There’s much context around this idiom these days but to simplify, go with the flow, means to be in agreement with what is. So, then the question becomes “what is?” The earth moves in natural rhythmic patterns. Things like the sun and moon, day and night, fall and spring, winter and summer, hills and valleys, ebb and flow, etc.…. represent the way nature moves in and out of days, seasons, times; life. It’s all about the waves of balance. In order to go along with the flow, it is important to recognize the rhythmic cycles of nature. One of the ways to have synchronicity (meaningful connectivity) with nature is through spiritual rest and wellness.

Spiritual rest involves disciplined moments of renewal and recovery. It’s about appealing to a Higher Power; subscribing to a greater energy source other than yourself. Dr. Jim Loehr, world-renowned performance psychologist, Co-Founder of the Human Performance Institute, and author of The Power of Full Engagement says, “…we too are meant to make waves, oscillating between periods of work and rest.”

According to several wellness institutes, Spiritual Wellness is about finding meaning and purpose in human existence; to be in harmony with oneself and others while working to balance inner needs with the rest of the world. The National Wellness Institute states that the path to spiritual wellness may involve simply thinking through the ways you receive meaning in your life or talking about these with important family or friends.  In addition, some individuals have practices that allow them to focus on the meaning in their lives such as meditation, prayer, yoga, or other specific spiritual practices that support your connection to a higher power or belief system.

There are significant health benefits to spiritual rest such as the expansion in certain areas of the brain…. frontal lobes which control concentration, attention, focus and problem analysis. Spiritual Rest is a type of parasympathetic activity; when this kind of activity dominates, healing and regeneration occur. The body performs activities like digesting, detoxifying, eliminating, and building immunity.

Regimented patterns of Spiritual Rest are needed to help you stay connected to the rhythms of nature and life. When you find yourself out of balance, you must be able to connect to a Greater Source to renew, recover, and realign yourself. One scripture (Joshua 1:8) states that in order to prosper and have good success, one should meditate on the Higher Book of Law. I encourage you to dance to the rhythms of life.
